Few sounds say “British garden” like the rich, flute-like melodic stylings of the Blackbird. Haunting and yet jubilant all at the same time, little wonder this thrush's song is so many people's favourite and has inspired songs.

Typically one of the first birds to start singing in the dawn chorus, the Blackbird is often the last bird still singing into the dusk. Not just that, but their loud, sweet song is often delivered from a prominent perch, such as the top of a tree or roof, making them easy to spot.

As you get your ear in, you'll start to recognise the Blackbird's song for its smooth, flowing, relaxed and almost conversational rhythm. Each phrase is unique and there's no repetition or looping like the Song Thrush; the Blackbird is a veritable master of improvisation!
