Learn and Build - Working Together for Nature

Thanks to year-long partnership project, Learn and Build – Working Together for Nature, with Llanfyllin Shed., local people of all ages learnt about nature and around 150 wildlife homes were created.

Funded by National Lottery Awards for All, the initiative saw us work with local community groups, such as Berriew Brownies and Camp Plas, to engage people in learning about nature by building wildlife homes - a mixture of bird, bat, insect and hedgehog boxes.

“Over the 12 months we reached out to hundreds of people who I’m sure enjoyed the experience and learnt something at the same time,” says Gary, Shed Member.

“[I’ve] loved working with the children and seeing how interested they were in the project,” adds Gill J, another Shed Member.

Not only did participants learn how to care for nature and their environment and gained some basic woodworking skills, many took creations home to install in their own gardens, providing additional space for nature in Montgomeryshire!

Running from 1st April 2024 until 31st March 2025, the project reached out to hundreds of local people, giving everyone involved a sense of community, local pride and belonging, while making positive changes for the environment and conservation.

Twelve awareness-raising events were held across the year, working with local community groups and attending local events. Members of Llanfyllin Shed (also known simply as 'The Shed') came with flat-pack wildlife homes for people to build, alongside an MWT staff member who talked about the different birds and animals the creations would provide habitat for. Participants learnt how to care for nature and their environment, as well as gaining hands-on basic woodworking skills.
