About the event
Llanymynech Rocks is well worth a visit at any time of year, but in spring this limestone outcrop starts coming to life with colour, wildflowers and the butterflies for which it’s perhaps most renowned.
Local entomologist (insect expert), Dr Simon Spencer, will be leading an enjoyable and informative walk around the site to spot spring butterflies, such as Brimstone and Green Hairstreak. All abilities and ages, including accompanied children, welcome.
Meeting at the Shropshire Wildlife Trust (SWT) car park, walkers will then head up to Llanymynech Golf Club and onto Offa’s Dyke Path, with a total walking distance of around 1-1.5km and lasting around 2 hours. The paths are narrow and steep in some places and can be muddy and slippery depending on the weather. For further information on accessibility, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
There will be no charge for this event, but booking on is essential to help us plan. Butterflies need sunshine, so if the weather forecast suggests conditions are going to be unfavourable the event will be cancelled and event attendees will be contacted.
Due to the nature of this walk, we can only accommodate medical support dogs. For any queries, please get in touch.
If you can’t make this walk, or the one taking place on Saturday 18th April, but are interested in learning more about this site and its butterflies, please contact Simon for short-notice walks and/or volunteering opportunities
This event is taking place as part of the Grazing on the Rocks project, which is funded by the Nature Networks Programme and delivered by the Heritage Fund, on behalf of the Welsh Government
