MONTGOMERYSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST
2011 PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

The standard of entries in MWT's 2011 Photographic Competition was incredibly high in all three age categories. This made the task facing the staff and independent judges a daunting proposition but after much discussion and debate the winners have been picked and we are delighted to present them here along with some of the judge’s comments:

Overall Competition Winner – Phil Owen from Newtown
Orange Tip
Orange Tip by Phil Owen
"This picture was a favourite with all the judges and not just because of the crispness of the image and the depth of the colours. Phil has managed to find an angle that not only offers a detailed image of the butterfly’s head, but also captures both the lower and under wing coloration of the Orange Tip butterfly. An eye catching, beautiful image."

10 and Under Category Winner – Lauren Teasdale from Newtown
Green Pond
Green Pond by Lauren Teasdale
"This photo really draws you in – it takes a moment to realise what you are looking at, then you peek through the leaves and spot the pond. The different depths and colours of the flora, coupled with the subtle lighting, gives it an other worldly feel."

11 to 18 Years Category Winner – Thomas Faulkner from Llanfair Caereinion
Don’t Touch Me – I’m Irritating
Don't Touch Me - I'm Irritating by Thomas Faulkner
"The detail and clarity of this shot are fantastic, but what really makes it special is the sense of movement Thomas has captured. You get a real sense of the caterpillar warning the watcher off!"

Over 18 Years Category Winner – Danny Beath from Shrewsbury
Montgomery Castle
Montgomery Castle by Danny Beath
"The combination of the manmade and natural environment in this picture is highlighted by the flock of birds disturbed from their roost in the castle and the encroaching flora in the foreground. In addition, the lighting is lovely, with the sun breaking through the clouds to give the effect of natural spot lighting on the background hills while adding an almost eerie quality to the castle itself."

A big thank you and congratulations to everyone who entered this year’s competitions. Photograph entries can be collected from the Trust office by prior arrangement (contact Eley on 01938 555654). We look forward to next year’s competition and hope even more people will take the opportunity to enter.
