Red House

Oozing!

Map of Red House Nature Reserve

A large wet meadow, a reed swamp, a pool and a wet woodland make up most of this riverside reserve – but why is it so wet? Because the river floods, there is an endless water supply running off the hills, and the Montgomery Canal contributes too!

The wet woodland and its watery plant species make this reserve important. One particularly significant plant is the weirdly attractive sweet flag, found here in abundance. A species list of over 150 varieties of wetland plants including herbs and grasses, has been listed at Red House including reedmace, bulrush, bur reed, canary grass and flag iris.

Directions to the reserve: The reserve is located at grid reference SO170968. The main access is off the Montgomeryshire Canal which runs alongside the A483 from Welshpool to Newtown. The reserve can be found between Garthmyl and Abermule 250m off the Glanhafren Bridge. The nearest facilities are situated in Welshpool next to the Tourist Information Centre.
